German automotive supplier MöllerTech will build a new $46.3 million manufacturing facility in Bibb County that will create 222 jobs. Alabama Secretary of Commerce Greg Canfield revealed MöllerTech’s plan to construct a 150,000-square-foot facility in the Scott G. Davis Insutrial Park near Interstate 20 in Bibb County at a press event at the Bibb County Board of Education on Monday afternoon.
The company will manufacture interior parts for Mercedes-Benz SUV’s as part of a $1.3 billion expansion. MöllerTech’s North American President and CEO Steve Jordan said the Bibb County facility will serve as the company’s flagship manufacturing facility.
“After many months visiting various states, as well as numerous counties in Alabama, we are pleased to settle in Bibb County,” said Jordan. “Our Möller Culture is very much centered on people and local communities and because of that we find that there is ‘a good fit’ between MöllerTech and Bibb County. The help that we received both financially as well as personally from the State and the County helped us in making this decision. So we would like to thank the State of Alabama as well as Bibb County in being patient and supporting us in this new venture of ours.”
MöllerTech has two U.S. facilities in Elberton, Ga., and Detroit, Mich. It hopes to be at full production in Bibb County by the end of 2019.
The Bibb County Commission, the Alabama Department of Commerce, the Economic Development Partnership of Alabama, Alabama Power Co. and the Birmingham Business Alliance worked together closely to bring the project to the Birmingham region.
“This will be a great boost for Bibb County and its workforce,” said Bibb County Commissioner Ricky Hubbard. “MöllerTech will be the second largest manufacturing employer in the county and the third largest overall. We are excited that their investment will impact the lives of so many people here.”
The Lakeshore Foundation in Birmingham has current job openings.
Lakeshore Foundation has been a special place for Birmingham since it was founded in the 1970s as a rehabilitation hospital for HealthSouth Corp. It quickly became a leading resource and advocate for individuals with disabilities throughout the community, helping them lead a healthy, active lifestyle. Today, Lakeshore is a key component of the U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC), geared toward serving Olympic and Paralympic athletes. A number of athletes trained in Birmingham and competed in the Paralympics in Brazil last month.
In addition to the impact Lakeshore Foundation continues to have in the U.S. Paralympic Games, the organization currently rosters more than 80 youth/adults with varying types of physical disabilities in 13 adapted sports. The foundation offers canoeing, kayaking, tennis, basketball, rugby and an injured military program for people with disabilities. The Lakeshore Foundation also has a research initiative with the University of Alabama at Birmingham to create technological advances that will make life easier for the people it serves.
Damian Veazey, Associate Director of Communications for Lakeshore Foundation, sat down with me last month to discuss the impact of Lakeshore Foundation. “The Lakeshore Foundation gives unique individuals the opportunity to meet people that have a similar condition and can learn from them as well,” Veazey stated. “You can be an everyday member and experience the extensive aquatics center, fitness center, where people merge athletics into recreation like – canoeing, kayaking, tennis, basketball and rugby. We even have a research initiative with UAB to help create innovative technology with wheelchair enhancement; policy and advocacy.”
President of Lakeshore Foundation Jeff Underwood told us, “For any non-profit to be able to successfully pursue its mission, it takes community support. We want to continue to give the community a good reason to support our work – because we’re helping America’s athletes be successful and bringing that positive attention to the community.”
Its Lima Foxtrot program is geared to help injured military members in the community. Since it was initiated in 2006, Lima Foxtrot has served over 1,800 injured servicemen and women and their families, from 46 states and territories. Through Lima Foxtrot these young men and women use lessons from sport and recreation to learn how to pursue life after injury.
