Police are coming under fire once again after a video from a 2014 altercation with an African American man was released yesterday. The video shows Pele Smith’s head being slammed into a car windshield so hard that the glass cracked, leaving his head bloodied. After this action, Smith said another officer climbed inside the car and began to taunt him through the window.
The police were called initially because of drug complaints in the Lorain, Ohio neighborhood where the incident took place. At the time of the assault, the officers already had Smith handcuffed and were supposed to be escorting him to a police vehicle, but pushed him up against the windshield glass instead.
The police tell a different version of what occurred. Officials stated that Smith was resisting arrest and attempted to swallow drug evidence. However, Smith is embroiled in a civil case with the department, stating that his civil rights were violated. The suit focuses on Zachary Ference, the officer who pushed Smith into the windshield.
Officers stated that Smith is a “violent drug trafficker” who’s had numerous run-ins with police, but his criminal record shows no violent crimes.
