The Mississippi chapter of the NAACP has requested that an incident involving a black student and a noose be investigated by the FBI.
A noose was placed around an African American football player during a break in practice at Stone High School in Wiggins, Mississippi by four white students. Police are not releasing the names of the students.
The incident took place almost two weeks ago on October 13. The NAACP is calling for the incident to be looked into as a federal hate crime. It is not clear if there were any abrasions left on the victim’s neck, but the noose was placed around that portion of his body and pulled.
Derick Johnson, President of the Mississippi Chapter of the NAACP, stated in a recent press conference, “No student should be accosted with a noose around their neck - it’s 2016, not 1916.”
Reportedly, there are around 800 students at Stone High School, with only a quarter being African American.
