Even with the Sunday rain showers and 30 percent chance of rain tomorrow in Birmingham, residents cannot dodge the limitations on water looming due to drought.
According to AL.com, the area is in a stage three drought management plan. This means that a surcharge of 200 percent will be levied for excessive water use in or outside homes. The change will be implemented by the Birmingham Water Works board beginning November 19.
In laymen terms, if you are a resident in the Birmingham metro area and use more than 8,977 gallons of water during one month, you will be subject to an upcharge on your water bill. The charge will be separate from your regular monthly water bill, but both must be paid in order to continue service.
BWW assistant general manager of operations and technical services, Darryl R. Jones, told AL.com, "This is the best alternative for us to maintain our water resources and make it through the remainder of the fall.”
