What people will do for kicks these days really boggles the mind. In 2011, Sarah Adelia Graves and Shelbie Brooke Richards were leaving a party in Rankin County with a group of people. During their excursion with another driver, the group decided they wanted to run over an African American man for no other reason than to have some sport. Although, Deryl Paul Dedmon was the actual driver of the vehicle, the girls knew what they were going to do and participated. According to reports, they traveled to Jackson, MS with an expressed determination to assault someone of African American descent.
The women are now 22 and 21 years old, respectively, and were provided with the maximum sentences available last Thursday after entering a plea of guilty to committing a hate crime. As a stipulation of the plea agreements, the girls were required to face the family of the victim. They offered apologies as they sobbed, blaming the partying lifestyles of teenagers at that time.
Richards was sentenced to eight years in prison and Graves was given five years for the crime. Unfortunately, their sentences will not re-instate the life of their innocent victim, James Craig Anderson.
