If you thought your luggage was safe on an airplane, think again. Unbeknownst to TSA workers at the Miami International Airport, cameras were set up that caught them smuggling anything they thought was of value out of passengers’ bags before loading them. Pete Estis, a police lieutenant in the area, stated: “It’s a problem we all face. We will continue to be proactive until we see that the claims of pilfering through luggage will actually decrease.” There have been 31 arrests of baggage handlers in Miami in the past three years.
However, this is not simply a Miami issue. There have been other airports, such as JFK, with reported cases of lost commodities. According to CNN, there have been 30,621 of these occurrences between the years of 2010 and 2014. Hopefully, the crackdown of tolerance for this behavior will inhibit thieves from having access to your valuables in the future.
